Open tool →Which risk analysis tool should you use?
| Tool | Use it when… | Typical industries |
|---|---|---|
| Risk Matrix | You need a risk register rated by likelihood and impact | Any |
| FMEA | You want to prevent failures of a design or process | Automotive, medical devices, manufacturing |
| FMECA | You have failure rates and need quantified criticality | Aerospace, defence, medical, energy |
| Hazard Analysis | You need product safety risk management (hazard → harm) | Medical devices, machinery |
| Preliminary Hazard Analysis | You are at concept or early design stage | Systems, defence, transport |
| HAZOP | You are reviewing a process design with P&IDs | Chemical, pharma, oil and gas, food |
| HACCP | You need a food safety plan with critical control points | Food and beverage |
| What-If Analysis | You want a quick review of a process or a change | Any |
| Bowtie Analysis | You want to show the barriers for a major risk on one page | Process safety, EHS, quality |
| Fault Tree Analysis | You want the combinations of failures that cause one top event | Safety and reliability |
The risk management process
- Identify. Find hazards and failure modes with PHA, what-if, HAZOP or FMEA.
- Analyse. Estimate severity and likelihood, quantitatively with FMECA or fault tree analysis when data allows.
- Evaluate. Compare the risks with your criteria on a risk matrix.
- Control. Design out, protect, then inform; show the barriers on a bowtie.
- Monitor and review. Verify the controls and update the analysis with real-world data.
From risk files to living risk management
Risk analyses lose their value when they sit in folders. Cloudtheapp links risk assessments to their controls, audits, nonconformances, complaints, CAPA and change control, so risks are reassessed as conditions change and every action is tracked to closure, with approvals and a full audit trail.
Frequently asked questions
Which risk analysis method should I use?
It depends on the question and the stage. Use a risk matrix for a risk register; FMEA for product and process failure modes; FMECA when you have failure rate data; hazard analysis for product safety (ISO 14971); PHA early in design; HAZOP for process plants; HACCP for food safety; what-if for quick reviews and changes; and bowtie to communicate the controls for a major risk.
What is the difference between a hazard and a risk?
A hazard is a potential source of harm. Risk combines how likely harm is to occur with how severe it would be. Risk analysis identifies hazards and estimates risks; risk evaluation decides whether they are acceptable; risk control reduces them.
Which standards do these tools follow?
They follow the structure of the common references: AIAG-VDA FMEA Handbook (Action Priority), MIL-STD-1629A (FMECA), MIL-STD-882E (PHA risk matrix), ISO 14971 (hazard analysis), IEC 61882 (HAZOP), Codex Alimentarius (HACCP) and ISO 31000 principles for the risk matrix.
Can I customize the risk matrix?
Yes. In the risk matrix tool you can choose 3×3, 4×4 or 5×5, rename the levels and click any cell to change its risk level. The other tools use a standard 5×5 matrix, or the MIL-STD-882E matrix for the PHA.
Is my data private, and is it free?
Yes. All tools are free, need no account, and keep your data in your browser. Export to PDF, PNG, Excel or CSV whenever you need to share.
Keep risks reviewed, not filed and forgotten
Cloudtheapp connects risk assessments to controls, CAPA, change control and audits, so risks are reviewed and reduced instead of filed and forgotten, in one AI-powered, validated cloud QMS.
